"Huatulco Ecotours" are growing in both popularity and number throughout the Bays of Huatulco. The mountain areas surrounding the Copalita River are also home to other natural treasures worth exploring, including the Copalitilla Cascades. Thirty kilometers (19 miles) north of Tangolunda at 394m (1,300 ft.) above sea level, this group of waterfalls average between 20 to 25m (65-80 ft.) in height form natural whirlpools and clear pools for swimming. The area is also popular for horseback riding and rappelling.
"Huatulco Coffee Plantation Tours" takes you into the mountains east of Huatulco, touring various coffee plantations. You'll learn how Oaxacan coffee is cultivated and learn about life on the plantations. Lunch and refreshments are included. "Huatulco Horseback Riding" through the jungles and to Conejos and Magueyito beach makes for a wonderful way to see the natural beauty of the area. The ride lasts 3 1/2 hours, with departures at 9:45am and 1:45pm, and costs $45. Available through Caballo del Mar Ranch.
"Huatulco Bird Watching Tours", local expert field guide Pedro Gasca will take you to several sites, depending on the season, to view a variety of species from parrots to pygmy owls. The cost for birding expeditions vary from $20 to $80 depending on the length of the tour and the sites to be visited; each is individually designed for the client's preferences, and include land or aquatic transportation, a birding list, trip report, and beverages.
"Huatulco Hiking" and "Bird Watching Nature Tours" {958-583-4047}. The Choices include a hike around Punta Celeste with views of the river, open sea, and forest, for sightings of terrestrial and aquatic birds. The 3 1/2-hour tour can be made in the early morning or late afternoon, and costs about $45. An 8-hour excursion to the Ventanilla Lagoons takes you by boat through a mangrove to view birds, iguanas, and crocodiles. The cost is $80, and lunch is included. Tours include transportation, binoculars, specialized bird guide, and beverages. |

The undeveloped areas of Huatulco Mexico are to the west of Santa Cruz, its beaches are less developed; in fact most of this area still belongs to the Parque Nacional Huatulco. This is a protected area (Área Natural Protegida) created in 1998. It contains 6,375 hectares of lowland jungle and 5,516 hectares of marine areas, encompassing the bays of Bahía Maguey, Bahía Órgano, Bahía Cacaluta, Bahía Chachacual and Bahía San Agustín. In these bays live the most important coral communities of the Mexican Pacific. |

Huatulco Coffee Plantaton Tours - There are a number of coffee plantations that are still in operation and which give tours, including Finca (known as farm) Las Nieves, Finca Monte Carlos, Finca Margaritas, Finca El Pacífico and Finca La Gloria. Finca El Pacífico is known for the organic coffee it produces called "Pluma Hidalgo," and it is surrounded by waterfalls and ravines. Finca La Gloria is known for the butterfly sanctuary "Mariposorio Dain Biguid", where dozens of species of butterfly can be seen and the "Llano Grande Falls". The Río Copalitilla has its source here as well. |
